There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about how often you should wash your face, but you can forget it because you will learn what an esthetician thinks. Learn what I tell my clients and what I have found to be the best way to keep your skin clean, balanced, and happy.
What Are Cleansers
First, it’s important to know that in the skin care world there are facial cleansers and facial washes. So what’s the difference? They both clean or remove dirt or other substances, right?
Yes. Both cleansers and washes are facial care product that is used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and other types of pollutants from the skin.
The difference is that a cleanser is non-foaming and doesn’t need to be washed off but instead wiped off. A face wash is a foaming cleanser that can be used as a substitute for soap.
Some other differences:
Cleaners can be used daily and are more gentle and less irritating
A cleanser is more moisturizing and hydrating than most face washes
Face washes are great if you have oily skin as they are generally more drying
Face washes are more similar to soap
When shopping for a face wash or cleanser, be sure to read the label and pick the best one for your skin type and conditions.
Why Do You Need To Cleanse Your Skin
Cleansing your skin regularly is critical for maintaining healthy skin. Here is why facial cleansing is so important:
keeps pores unclogged which prevents blackheads and acne breakouts.
Boosts hydration
Removes impurities
Keeps your skin looking radiant and healthy
Maintains clear skin
How Often Should I Cleanse My Skin
The million-dollar question, right? The reason you are reading this article. It’s a highly debated question and there many different answers online about it. I am going to give you my opinion from working as a professional esthetician. I have worked on hundreds of clients. This is what I tell my clients and it is what I am going to tell you.
First, let me tell you that I have witnessed many of my clients see major improvements in their skin from this one little piece of advice. Ready?
Cleanse your skin only once a day.
There it is. I don’t suggest twice a day. I don’t care what type of skin you have. Over-cleansing can be stripping and cause more damage. I know it’s common to hear that you should wash your face twice a day, no “if’s, and’s, but’s” about it. I don’t agree. You use a lot more product and have to buy more often so it’s good advice to give if you want to make a buck…if you get my drift.
How To Wash Your Face Properly To Prevent Acne And Dryness
You may be wondering why I suggest only once a day. The reason is that cleansing can be stripping. Why this isn’t ideal is that your skin produces sebum (oil) to moisturize itself. If the pores are stripped of sebum then they will kick into high gear to produce more so that the skin doesn’t become too dry.
Not the best if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Furthermore, if the skin gets too oily then it will slow down the oil secretion and this can cause the skin to get too dry.
Over-cleansing can cause your skin to battle itself between too dry and too oily and this can cause many skin issues. How about just taking it easy and cleanse your skin once a day and let your skin stay balanced, peaceful and happy.
Best Way to Wash Your Face
Ok, so now you know that you should cleanse your skin once a day. But when? How?
It is best to wash your skin at night before bed. This way you get the dirt, debris, gunk, makeup off so your skin can rest and rejuvenate as you sleep.
If you cleanse your skin at night, there is no reason to get up and do it again in the morning. Unless you sleep in a mud pit somewhere. Which I hope for your sake, you don’t.
In the morning rinse your skin with water but skip the face wash. This even applies if you workout in the morning. Rinse the sweat off with water and spritz your face with your favorite hydrator.
Bottom Line
Keeping your skin clean is crucial for having clear, vibrant, and healthy skin. Just be sure that you aren’t over-doing it and creating more issues. Find a cleanser or face wash that works well for your skin and remember to use it before bed to remove dirt and other impurities. Treat your skin with love. Don’t be too harsh and strip it of the sebum that it needs to keep it smooth, soft, and moisturized. Get a facial cleanser here.
